Passengers on an American Airlines flight were shocked as a man allegedly stood up, exposed himself and then urinated in the middle of the aisle.

Neil McCarthy, 25, of Oregon, was arrested and charged with indecent exposure after the plane was diverted to Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Police meet the plane at Gate 2 at the airport and a flight attendant let them know what happened on the plane.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles M. Kruly, who is handling the case, said it happened on Wednesday on a flight headed to Manchester, New Hampshire.

McCarthy reportedly told officers he was flying from Portland, Oregon, to Manchester and had several whiskey drinks before boarding and then more during a layover in Chicago.

He said he got up to use the restroom but he has a medical urination problem, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Associated Press.

McCarthy had an initial appearance Wednesday afternoon in front of a U.S. Magistrate Judge and was released on his own recognizance.

It was unclear if he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

McCarthy faces a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a $5,000 fine.
