A whopping three-quarters of Americans believe Democrats would have a better chance of winning the 2024 election if somebody other than President Joe Biden was atop the ticket, according to a new poll.
The survey from CNN and SSRS also shows that Biden, whose approval rating has fallen to a new low of 36%, would lose his matchup against former President Donald Trump by 6 points: 49% to 43%.
Trump bested Biden in the survey even while scoring a 39% favorable to 54% unfavorable rating.
The poll was taken June 28-30 in the days after Biden's disastrous performance in his nationally televised debate with Trump that sparked questions about his fitness for office and led some Democrats and major donors to call for him to withdraw from the race.
Registered voters were asked if they thought Democrats had a better shot at winning the presidency if Biden, 81, was the standard bearer or whether someone else should be the nominee.
Twenty-five percent said they would stick with Biden, but 75% said they'd ditch him for another candidate.
Among Democrats, 43% said they would keep Biden on the ticket, while 56% would opt for someone else.
Registered voters by 60% to 40% believe Republicans should stick with Trump, 78, over another nominee, while 83% of Republicans remain solidly in the former president's corner.
The president, in an interview that aired Friday night on ABC News, said only the "Lord almighty" could convince him to drop out of the race, despite pressure from some in his party who believe he would lose in November.
Among possible Biden replacements, Vice President Kamala Harris appears to have the best shot at beating Trump in a hypothetical matchup.
Trump leads her just 47% to 45%.
He's ahead of California Gov. Gavin Newsom 48% to 43%, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg 47% to 43% and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer 47% to 42%.
The poll surveyed 1,274 adults. It has a plus/minus 3.5 percentage point margin of error.
