Two teenagers who drowned off Coney Island were sisters, according to police and media reports

The teens, 17 and 18, were reported missing around 8 p.m. Friday after they entered the water in the rain when the lifeguards were off duty, a witness told ABC News.

Following an extensive search, teens were located and pulled from the water at around 9:15. The were rushed in critical condition to Coney Island Hospital, but did not survive the night, New York NBC Channel 4 reported Saturday.

Their identities were not released, but police confirmed they were sisters.

"I saw a lot of cops and firemen running towards the situation, and then the next thing you know, the family of the victims they go to the same area but were told to go to the boardwalk," witness Danny Quinones told CBS News. "It's a very tragic event."

Divers also searched for a man believed to be in his 20s who reportedly went into the water to help the teens. But police said later there was no other missing swimmer.
