A Norwegian cyclist was killed in a crash while barreling down Austria's highest mountain, prompting cancellation of the cross-country race in which he was competing.

Andre Drege, 25, "sustained severe injuries" and died following the accident during the Tour of Austria on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

On Sunday, the scheduled final stage of the race was canceled and replaced with a memorial ride in his honor, the BBC reported.

"The memorial ride was the express wish of Andre's father, his teammates and his entire team," Tour of Austria director Thomas Pupp said. "It gives the entire cycling family the opportunity to come to terms with what happened and to honor Andre Drege's memory."

Cyclists competing in the contemporaneous Tour de France were also scheduled to observe a moment of silence before beginning Sunday's ninth stage in Troyes, the BBC said.

Drege, a member of Norway's Team Coop-Respol, was killed on the 30-mile Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which features 36 twists and turns as well as spectacular, panoramic views of the Austrian Alps.

He had been expected to move up to the International Cycling Union's elite World Tour level next year and race with the Jayco-AlUla team, the BBC said.
