Russia has issued a threat that it will take counter measures to news that the U.S. will deploy long-range missiles in Germany.
The U.S. and Germany announced at the 70th NATO Summit in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday that they would deploy long-range missile capabilities in Germany in 2026 to reconfirm their commitment to NATO while Russia is battling Ukraine, Reuters reported.
Ultimately, the move would reportedly lead to longer-term deployment that would include SM-6, Tomahawk cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons with a longer range than current capabilities in Europe, according to Reuters.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov angrily responded to the announcement, accusing NATO of "once again very clearly confirm[ing] its essence: It is an alliance created in an era of confrontation with the aim of maintaining confrontation."
This is a "very serious threat to the national security of our country. All of this will require us to take thoughtful, coordinated, effective responses to deter NATO, to counteract NATO," Peskov warned.
NATO also announced Wednesday that a new American defense system in northern Poland to intercept ballistic missile attacks was "mission ready."
