Security is being beefed up for this week's Republican National Convention in Milwaukee following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally on Saturday.

The Madison Police Department, University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department and Dane County Sheriff's Office said they will be sending officers to help boost safety in and around the Fiserv Forum, according to local TV station WKOW.

Downtown Milwaukee was already divided into "soft" and "hard" restricted-access zones, with only authorized law enforcement personnel allowed to carry guns in the hard zone around the arena, the station said.

Efforts by local officials to ban guns from the soft zone failed because the state prohibitis local gun-control rules, according to WKOW.

A video posted online Sunday by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel showed closed roads, chain-link fencing, vehicle checkpoints and pedestrian screening tents around the FiServ Forum.

Police officers wearing tactical vests also stood guard at various locations, and cops rode bicycles around the area.

Wisconsin Republican Party Chairperson Brian Schimming said Sunday that officials might alter the convention's schedule in response to the shooting that killed one Trump supporter, critically wounded two and left Trump with a bullet hole through his upper right ear.

Schimming also said it "remains to be decided" when Trump will arrive in the city and what he will do there, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said, citing remarks made on WISN-TV.

"I don't see a situation where there are massive changes," Schimming said.

In a Saturday night memo,Trump campaign staffers were told that the convention would "continue as planned," but that security would be increased at their offices in Washington, D.C., and West Palm Beach, Florida.

Senior campaign advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles told their team to stay away from the offices on Sunday as officials "assess both locations."

"We are enhancing the armed security presence with 24/7 officers on-site. Additional security assessments will be in place. Our highest priority is to keep all of you on this staff safe," according to the memo, which was posted online by Politico.

"We also urge you to recognize the political polarization in this heated election. If something looks or feels off, please flag it immediately for leadership or an on-site security team."

LaCivita and Wiles also told staffers to "not comment publicly" on Saturday's "horrendous attack."

"We condemn all forms of violence, and will not tolerate dangerous rhetoric on social media," they wrote.
