Buckingham Palace has revealed that King Charles III wrote a private letter to Donald Trump following the shocking incident at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The monarch, 75, reached out to the former president after he survived an attempted assassination on Saturday.

Officials from Buckingham are not releasing the content of the king's letter but stated that it's in line with the comments made by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The letter was delivered through Britain's embassy in Washington, according to Newsweek.

Starmer took to social media platform X to write:

"I am appalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump's rally, and we send him and his family our best wishes.

"Political violence in any form has no place in our societies, and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack."

It's usually common for British monarchs to extend supportive letters at times of national crisis or disaster, but in most cases, the text of the letter is made public by the palace.

The US presidential election campaign adds a specific context for the attempt on Trump's life that may set an awkward backdrop for the palace.

Given the seriousness of the situation, it is expected that the king would intervene.

An assassination attempt on Trump took place at the start of his speech at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, during which a bullet grazed his right ear.

The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Pennsylvania, was shot and killed at the scene by Secret Service agents.

Officials have yet to reveal a motive.
