World No. 1 Nadal admitted last week his loss to Stanislas Wawrinka in January's Australian Open was one of the most difficult defeats of his career - partly because he wasn't 100 percent after he hurt his back in warm-ups.

"It was one of the toughest moments in my career," Nadal told the ATP website, via CNN. "It was tough being there for 90 minutes knowing that you will not win. But not winning was not the worst thing. The worst thing was knowing I could not compete.

"When you are losing and competing, that's part of sport. This loss was worse for me than 2012 and the six hours against Novak (Djokovic). I did everything right to be there and compete in the final, and I couldn't. Wawrinka was playing unbelievable. I don't know if I would have had the chance to win that match because he was playing amazing."

Nadal, who admitted the loss stuck with him for some time, began his campaign for the 2014 Paribas title with a three-set win on Saturday against Radek Stepanek. The Spaniard looked back in form and acknowledged his back felt healthy.

His next obstacle is Dolgopolov, who'se ranked No. 28 in the World. Dolgopolov earned a spot in the third round after defeating Tim Smyczek in two sets.
