'This is not a security incident or cyberattack,' said cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which blamed a 'defect' in a software update

A major IT outage has grounded airlines, and hit banking systems, hospitals and industries around the world.

The cybersecutiy firm CrowdStrike said a "defect" in one of its software updates hit Windows operating systems

"This is not a security incident or cyberattack," the firm said in a statement. "The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed," it added.

Delta Airlines announced Friday that all Delta flights worldwide were being "paused" due to the issue. It later said that some flight departures had resumed.

American Airlines announced early Friday that its flights were resuming.
