A 68-year-old Florida man was arrested for allegedly making online threats against former President Donald Trump less than a week after he survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally.
Michael Martin Wiseman, of Jupiter, was charged Friday with a felony count of written death threats against Trump, who Republicans nominated this week to challenge President Joe Biden.
Wiseman is a registered Democrat, according to online records.
Multiple tipsters reportedly alerted authorities to posts on Wiseman's Facebook page in which he allegedly made threats against Trump, his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, and their families, according to the Jupiter Police Department.
Officers took Wiseman into custody "without incident," police said in a prepared statement.
"We take all threats to human beings seriously here at Jupiter Police Department," Deputy Chief Michael Barbera told reporters at a Friday evening news conference. "But given in light what happened a couple of days ago, we took it a step further."
Wiseman's Facebook page appeared on Saturday to have been removed but unconfirmed screenshots showed his threats.
Wiseman also allegedly advocated the rapes of the Republican candidates' daughters and said, "THEN tell me they won't fly their kids out of the USA for an abortion."
Wiseman's wife described herself as "embarrassed" and "mortified" following his arrest, local TV station WPTV reported.
She was present for his arraignment Saturday, when he was ordered held without bail pending a hearing on Aug. 19, according to online court records.
Wiseman's defense lawyer didn't immediately return an email seeking comment.
