A Swedish reporter was fatally shot in Kabul on Tuesday, adding to the concern of statewide security as elections near, CNN reported.
The Swedish Embassy identified the victim as 51-year-old Nils Horner, a radio correspondent.
According to Swedish Radio, Horner was shot dead on a street near a Lebanese restaurant in Afghanistan's capital, where a bomb went off in January. He was conducting interviews about the upcoming elections, slated for next month.
Horner was shot in the back of the head -- in broad daylight -- and transported to a hospital in the city, where he was later pronounced dead.
An Afghan police statement said Horner arrived in the country two days ago and had a driver and interpreter with him, who authorities are questioning.
"Nils was one of our absolute best and most experienced correspondents and what has happened to him today is terrible. We are now trying to get as many details as we can," Swedish Radio's Director-General Cilla Benkö said in a statement..
"We know there are high-risk areas. Kabul isn't an area Swedish Radio should not cover."
Horner traveled extensively for his work in journalism and covered the 2001 fall of the Taliban, 2004 tsunami in Asia, and the Iraq war, CNN said.
