World No. 2 Djokovic began his Paribas Open campaign with a two-set win on Sunday against Victor Hanescu. Although he notched the win, Djokovic seemed to struggle with his returns, something he hopes to have corrected by Tuesday's match.
"It's one of those days where you get to serve well and everything else is just kind of trying to find the way to, you know, play the right shots at the right time," Djokovic said after the match, via the tournament website. "You know, I didn't make any returns in the first set. Second set I also struggled with the return, which is one of my better sides in the game generally speaking.
"And, you know, it's the first match and it takes a little bit of time to get used to the center court. I haven't played on it this year."
Djokovic's next challenge is Gonzalez, who's ranked No. 91. Gonzalez made his Indian Wells debut this week against Adrian Mannarino, who lost in three sets. Gonzalez then went on to deliver an upset to Ivan Dodig in the second round, which earned him his first meeting against Djokovic.
The Serb may have an easier chance of claiming his fourth Indian Wells title after No. 1 Rafael Nadal lost on Monday in three sets to Alexandr Dolgopolov.
