Maryland Mall Shooter, Darion Marcus Aguilar, Inspired By Columbine

In a press conference on Wednesday, authorities provided further details on the Maryland mall shooting in January and suggested the gunman was inspired by the Columbine massacre, NBC News reported.

Darion Marcus Aguilar, 19, even dressed like the Columbine shooters and took a picture of himself before he began his rampage, which he uploaded to a Tumblr account.

"I had to do this. Today is the day," the post on the social media site read. "On previous days I tried this I woke up with anxiety, regret and hope for a better future this day I didn't, I woke up felt no emotions no empathy no sympathy."

Once he left the dressing room, he fatally shot two employees at Zumiez -- Brianna Benlolo, 21, and Tyler Johnson, 25, before taking his own life. According to police, he scheduled the time at 11:14 a.m., which is when the massacre at Columbine High School began.

Howard County Police Chief William McMahon said they will not release the picture to the public because Aguilar hoped to gain notoriety from it.

In addition to his Columbine obsession, police said Aguilar wanted to find effective mental health treatment. They also said there was no connection between Aguilar and his victims.

Though he had no criminal history, a search of his computer history showed Aguilar researched several mass shootings. Additionally, his Tumblr account featured images of shootings and other disturbing incidents. It also showed he downloaded a Columbine-inspired video game.

Investigators discovered that Aguilar visited a doctor in April 2013 and told him he was hearing voices. Though he was referred to a psychiatrist, there is no record of him ever making or attending an appointment.

The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.
