Plex personal media organizer received a major iOS update bringing automatic upload of photos to media server and free Chromecast feature without Plex Pass.
Plex Inc. rolled out an important update to its iOS mobile app that helps users organize personal media content on its own server. The most notable change to the app is that it now supports automatic camera upload. This brings the ease of backing up important photos from the camera roll automatically on your media server. Plex also freed the Chromecast feature from its Plex Pass subscription, allowing users to stream content on a Chromecast-connected TV.
The official iOS companion app for Plex allows users to cast music and photos, in addition to videos to a Chromecast-integrated TV. The feature was previously available exclusively with Plex Pass subscription, but now allows users, subscribers and non-subscribers to stream content for free. Plex also added play queues and shuffle support along with automatic upload of camera roll photos to the media server. The automatic camera upload feature, however, is tied to the Plex Pass subscription.
"We've got one super cool brand new feature for Plex Pass members on iOS called Camera Upload," Elan Feingold, CTO and Co-Founder of Plex wrote in a company blog, Thursday. "It's easy to explain: point the Plex app at a server and a photo library, and it'll make sure all the photos on your camera roll automatically upload to that library. We do all the work for you, in the background, using a brand new iOS 7 feature. Keep your phone in your pocket, as your photos are backed up safely in a Plex library, and then you can access them on all Plex apps, share them with friends or family, or (of course) fling them to your Chromecast (free for everyone now!)."
The subscription come in three different packages, monthly, annual and lifetime. Plex charges $3.99 per month for Plex Pass, $29.99 for a year and $74.99 for a lifetime subscription. The subscription based service includes features like Plex Sync for offline media viewing and Cloud Sync for syncing media to cloud, without any limits.
Existing users of Plex can simply update the app to take advantage of the new features, while new users can buy the $4.99 worth app from iTunes.
