No. 6 Virginia had their 13-game winning streak ended in their regular-season finale against Maryland, 75-69. The surprise loss to the unranked Terrapins served as a "little bit of a wake-up call" for Virginia, according to sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon.
"We were living on a high a little bit," Brogdon said, via the Associated Press. "We hadn't lost in a while and it's good when you're humbled right before do-or-die time."
Despite Virginia's 25-6 record earning them the top seed in the AAC tournament and a quarterfinal berth, the team continues to possess an underdog mentality.
"I do not feel like the favorite at all," said Brogdon. "... I always feel like my team is underestimated regardless of what we do, what we accomplish. It's good. It keeps you humble. It keeps you hungry."
Brogdon's teammate, senior forward Akil Mitchell, feels the same.
"All the guys here are underdogs and we all have underdog mentalities, and for teams to be excited to play us means we just have to bring it," Mitchell said. "Our margin for error is much smaller now. I feel like every guy in this locker room, every guy on this team feels like we have a chance to win when we're playing our style of basketball and doing it the right way."
Florida State (19-12) lost two of their last five games, including their regular-season finale against Syracuse. The Seminoles earned a spot in the quarterfinals after defeating Maryland on Wednesday, 67-65.
Virginia won both of their regular-season meetings against Florida State: 62-50 on Jan. 4 and 78-66 on Jan. 18.
