A Washington woman died on Friday, after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street.
Police in the northwestern city of Kenmore arrested a suspect they believe fatally crashed into the woman, who was in her 20s, according to Fox's local station in the Seattle area.
The woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was crossing the street at about 7 in the morning, Friday, on Juanita Avenue Northeast in Kenmore when a light-colored SUV suddenly thrashed down the street and hit her.
Police told Q13 Fox News that the woman was thrown far into the distance from the impact of the crash, then fell onto the street. Eyewitnesses told the sheriff's deputies that the person driving the SUV paused briefly before fleeing, leaving the victim lifeless on the ground.
"The place she was struck to the place she landed was some distance," King County Sheriff's Office representative Cindi West told KOMO News. "There is significant damage to his car."
Medical response officials and police deputies were immediately called to the site of the incident on Juanita Drive, West continued. They immediately transferred the woman to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, where she was pronounced deceased about three hours later.
A Kirkland man reportedly called law enforcement officers shortly after the incident, saying he "may have hit something" but was unsure what it was. Police who went to the man's home stated his vehicle matched the description of the SUV in question. They arrested him on investigation of felony hit-and-run charges, following a brief interview, Q13 Fox reported.
Juanita Avenue was closed on Friday, pending the investigation.
