Nose Leaking Brain Fluid: Arizona Man's Shocking Discovery

Joe Nagy just thought he had a case of terrible allergies.

For 18 months, the Arizona resident's nose ran continuously-globs of fluid streamed out of his nostrils, steadily flowing for over a year.

He was shocked to find out that it wasn't just pollen irking his sinuses-parts of his brain were actually leaking fluid from his nose, reported Fox 10 News.

He first noticed the icky stuff flowing from his orifice when he sat up quickly to rise from his bed one morning.

Nagy told the station that the sight completely caught him off guard.

"Broop! This clear liquid dribbled out of my nose like tears out of your eyes," he said. "I go, 'what is this?'"

Nagy tried taking a slew of allergy medicines, but the symptoms still worsened as time wore on.

He was forced to keep tissues at arms-reach all hours of the day, recalling moments when he couldn't grab a Kleenex in time.

The last straw came when he went to pick up blueprints for his model airplanes, and a fat glob of the liquid landed right on the drafts.

Embarrassed and ready to tear his hair out, Nagy made a trip to a specialist's office.

The doctor tested the fluid dripping from his nostrils, and discovered it was actually brain fluid, which frightened the wits out of Nagy, who was stunned by the news.

"I was scared to death if you want to know the truth," he said.

The membrane surrounding Nagy's brain had a gaping hole that was allowing the brain fluid to flow freely.

When Nagy decided to take action and receive brain surgery, he couldn't-he developed a near-deadly case of meningitis and the infected fluid was rendered inoperable.

When the infection dissipated, he had surgery done to fix the leak.

This surgery consists of a needled being put through the nose and a bit of glue being administered to the hole to patch it up.
