A college student from SUNY Brockport died in a snowboarding accident on Sunday, WHAM-TV reported.
Austin White, 22, was at Whiteface Mountain -- a ski resort near Lake Placid -- when the accident occurred. According to officials, White ran off the Excelsior trail and into a wooded area, where he ran into a tree.
Trooper Jennifer Fleishman said White's friends, who he traveled to the Adirondacks with, called 911 to report the crash. Additionally, several skiers performed CPR.
Fleishman added White was an experienced snowboarder but was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, where he was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.
White, a senior studying excercise science, was scheduled to graduate in May.
Both students and strangers took to social media sites like Twitter to express their shock and grief at White's sudden death.
"Thoughts and prayers go out to Austin White's family as they go through this difficult time. Another Brockport student gone too soon," Katelynn Groh tweeted.
"Damn, I didn't know Austin White, but as a fellow snowboarder and brockport student, my heart goes out to his family and friends. #RIP," Tyler Walker tweeted.
The university issued a statement following White's death on Monday.
"On behalf of the entire College at Brockport community, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Austin White," said University president John R. Halstead. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to them at this difficult time."
University officials said grief counselors will be available for students and faculty and can be reached at the university's Counseling Center at (585) 395-2207.
