The body of a girl believed to be three years old was found in the Chicago suburb of Riverdale on Sunday, NBC Chicago reported.
Police received a call around 3:25 p.m. from a person who claimed to find the body of a dead child. According to a spokesman from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the girl was discovered in a wooded area.
Officials did not provide further details on the girl and her name has not been released. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
The Riverdale Police Deparment is working with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force on the investigation, NBC said.
A report in the Chicago Tribune claims authorities are investigating whether the body is that of a child reported missing on Sunday.
According to officials, an unidentified adult left the child alone in her car seat for a few minutes. When the person returned to the vehicle, the child had disappeared.
The investigation is ongoing.
