A D.C. police officer fatally shot a man wanted in a homicide investigation on Tuesday morning, NBC Washington reported.
According to D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier, officers from U.S. Marshal's Capital Area Regional Task Force, which hunts down fugitives, were searching for the man potentially connected to one of the city's recent homicides around 6:15 a.m.
When authorities approached an apartment where he was believed to be, the suspect opened fire at officers, prompting them to shoot back. The suspect was shot and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
Lanier added that officers had been searching for the suspect -- whose name will not be released until family members are notified -- "for some time."
Witnesses near the incident reported hearing anywhere between 10 to 15 shots, NBC News said.
"It was like a war," witness Tim Reese told The Washington Post. "It was just like in the show 'Cops.'"
