Syrian Embassy In D.C. Closed Following Suspended Diplomatic Relations

The Syrian Embassy in Washington, D.C. was temporarily shut down on Tuesday amid suspended diplomatic relations between Syria and the U.S., the New York Daily News reported.

Additionally, the honorary consulates in Troy, Michigan and Houston, Texas were also closed and forced all personnel who are not legal U.S. residents to leave the country.

Daniel Rubinstein, the U.S. special envoy to Syria, said the move follows Syrian President Bashar Assad's decision to suspend it's own consular services.

"We have determined it is unacceptable for individuals appointed by that regime to conduct diplomatic or consular operations in the United States," said Rubinstein.

He added that the U.S. would like to maintain diplomatic relations with Syria is Assad chooses to step down from power.

The announcement comes as the Syrian civil war enters it's fourth year, with at least 150,000 killed as a result and little sign of any peace initiatives working.
