A group of black firefighters that sued New York City for discrimination announced they won the lawsuit and are eligible to receive a total of $98 million, the Associated Press reported.
The lawsuit, which was introduced seven years ago by the Center for Constitutional Rights, was filed by the Vulcan Society. They claim their settlement will cover the $6 million in lost medical payments.
Additionally, the city said the settlement will include back pay, fringe benefits, and interest to the test takers.
It is unknown how many people will be affected by the settlement. Further details are expected to be released during a press conference later Tuesday.
Lawyers for the Vulcan Society added that the FDNY -- which was 90 percent white when the suit was filed -- will be creating an executive position for diversity.
Though the FDNY has not commented on the case as of yet, Mayor Bill de Blasio sent a tweet applauding the ruling.
"Every New Yorker seeking to join @FDNY deserves a fair shot. Today's settlement moves us one step closer," the tweet said.
