If Jesus were to return to Earth, what would he think about the modern Christian religion?
According to a poll conducted on iSideWith.com, an overwhelming majority of Christians believe Jesus would disapprove of the direction the religion has taken. The question was posed by Reza Aslan, author of "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth." The responses were gathered over a period of time that began in September 2013.
Out of over 23,000 Americans, 87 percent voted they think Jesus would disapprove of modern Christianity. Nine percent voted Jesus would approve, while four percent said the question depends on which denomination of Christianity.
"Too vague, define 'Modern Christianity,' " a Republican from Vancouver, Washington wrote in the poll's comment section.
"Jesus would be sickened by the attacks on Christianity," a Republican from Kearney, Nebraska wrote.
The results were broken down into several categories including political party, education and what state the respondent lived in.
More Democrats, 89 percent, think Jesus would disapprove of Christianity than Republicans, 76 percent.
There was a vast difference in the results when it came to the respondent's level of education. Among those with only high school diplomas, 89 percent said Jesus would disapprove of Christianity and 87 percent with a Bachelor's degree said the same. But 68 percent of respondents with a Doctorate degree said Jesus would disapprove.
Differences were also seen when it came to the voter's state. Ninety percent of voters from Kentucky said Jesus would disapprove. Other southern states like Mississippi and South Carolina voted 89 percent.
In California, 87 percent said Jesus would disapprove. The result for New York was 85, and for Massachusetts the percentage was even lower at 83.
"I don't believe in the supernatural," one respondent from California wrote, "but if Jesus did exist and is the good that he is stated to be, he would not approve."
