Berkeley City Club Evacuated After Guest Commits Suicide With Deadly Chemical

Guests at a popular hotel in San Francisco were evacuated from the building on Tuesday afternoon after one woman committed suicide using a toxic chemical, the New York Daily News reported.

Shortly after 2 p.m., people rushed outside of the Berkeley City Club as HAZMAT crews investigated. According to police, they discovered a suicide note outside of the 80-year-old woman's door which notified authorities of the chemical.

The victim's name has not been released.

The chemical that was used is believed to be a mix of chemical sodium azide and water. When they mix, it turns it into toxic hydrazoic acid and is fatal if inhaled, according to the Daily News.

"The known quantity of what appeared to be a hazardous material has been removed," BPD Sergeant Joe Okies told the San Jose Mercury News.
