Sea 'Monster' Washes Ashore in New Zealand

Beachgoers were in for a shock when they discovered “what they thought was a prehistoric creature”, according to New-Zealand based Sun Live.

Visitors of the Pukehina Beach in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand found the remains of what is believed to be an Orca. The Orca, which bears an uncanny resemblance to prehistoric creatures because of its flippers and huge teeth, was about 30 feet (nine meters) in length.

A video was posted on YouTube on April 28 asking, “Can anyone identify this?”

According to mammal expert Anton van Helden, the remains can most likely be identified as an Orca—or killer whale—because of its fins.

A strongly decomposed animal washing ashore is not a new phenomenon according to Fox News. This has occurred for many centuries and, due to the terrible shape in which the creatures wash ashore, some have believed that the bodies were evidence for sea monsters or existing dinosaurs. These creatures have been given the name, “blobsters” or “blobs”.

In 1896 a large corpse was found on a beach in St. Augustine, Fla. The blob was six feet high and was said to be an oversized octopus.

Blobs have been found all over the world in the last 15 years. Some were found in Bermuda and Newfoundland. One was even found in 2003 which inspired the movie “Chilean Blob.”

In 2004 a group of biologists led by Sidney Pierce looked at all the blob materials and found—they were just various species of great whales.
