The Houston Texans reportedly traded quarterback Matt Schaub to the Oakland Raiders. The deal, reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday, could influence who the Raiders select with the No. 5 pick of the 2014 NFL draft.
Schaub's time in Houston is reportedly finished after seven years.
"The Oakland Raiders will trade a late-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft to the Houston Texans in exchange for quarterback Matt Schaub, a league source told ESPN," Schefter wrote on Friday. "The trade will be completed if Schaub passes a physical, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen."
Schaub's poor 2013 season, which included 15 turnovers, led to his exit out of Houston. The final straw came when the Texans signed veteran signal caller Ryan Fitzpatrick to a two-year deal on Thursday.
Oakland has long been reported as a team interested in acquiring Schaub, who will bring a veteran presence into the Raiders' young quarterback group.
Choosing to bring on Schaub's contract - $10 million in base salary with a $14.5 million salary cap hit - seemingly signals Oakland's intentions to stick with either Terrelle Pryor or Matt McGloin and use their No. 5 draft pick on a position other than quarterback.
Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins has been mentioned as a player the Raiders are interested in, and the latest mock draft by ESPN's Todd McShay lists Watkins going to Oakland with the fifth pick.
South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, whose draft stock has seemingly fallen, could be a realistic target if the St. Louis Rams pass on him with their No. 2 pick. Houston, Jacksonville and Cleveland - owners of the No. 1, 3 and 4 picks, respectively - are expected to draft a quarterback ahead of Oakland.
The 2014 draft begins on Thursday, May 8.
