Eighth-seeded Memphis is coming off Thursday's loss to Connecticut in the AAC tournament. The Tigers finished the regular season winning three of their last five games, an uneven finish the team hopes to bounce back from in the second round of March Madness.
"We've been kind of a little bit up and down in the stretch," Tigers coach Josh Pastner told the Associated Press. "... I just think you get here in a one-game situation, anything can happen. I really believe if you make shots and make 3s and you defend the 3, you're probably going to advance. And if you don't make 3s and you don't defend well, then the plane ride is going back Saturday morning."
The Tigers operate behind senior guard Joe Jackson, who leads the team in both scoring (14.3 ppg) and assists (4.5 apg). Jackson made headlines last week when he predicted Memphis would "win two games next week ... and you can put my statement on that," according to the Associated Press.
George Washington, meanwhile, is making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2007. They had their four-game winning streak ended on Saturday by VCU in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
