Cal Poly, making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, is the clear underdog against the first-seeded Shockers. The Mustangs earned a spot in March Madness with a 14-19 record. They made a strong push down the stretch of the season and won four straight games, including an 81-69 win against Texas Southern in Wednesday's first round.
Despite the comfortable win on Wednesday, playing Wichita State, who boasts a 34-0 record, will be nothing like playing Texas Southern.
"Wichita State is a great team, they're a national favorite, they've been undefeated all season," forward Chris Eversley told the Associated Press. "The one thing we like to focus on is just ourselves."
Shockers coach Gregg Marshall, who previously coached Winthrop, can empathize with the 16-seeded Cal Poly.
"I've been a 16-seed, I've been a 15-seed, a 14-seed a couple of times, and finally in 2007 we were an 11-seed," said Marshall. "That was by far the best the Big South had ever gotten, so I know exactly what they are feeling."
Wichita State remained undefeated and added the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship to this season's accomplishments with their 83-69 win on March 9 against Indiana State.
