Eighth-seeded Kentucky had an uneven finish down the stretch, losing four of their last seven games, including a 61-60 loss on Sunday to Florida in the SEC Tournament final.
Kentucky coach John Calipari's roster has only three players with NCAA Tournament experience, according to the Associated Press, but Friday's game gives the young players an opportunity to prove experience isn't everything.
"It's a chance for us to validate what people said we could do at the beginning of the year," freshman guard Aaron Harrison told the Associated Press. "We became much better in the last month or so, especially in the last two weeks. It's a new season, we get another opportunity to play, and just go out there and have fun and see what we can do."
Although Calipari starts five freshmen, he still expects fans to have lofty expectations for the Kentucky basketball program.
"You're at Kentucky. That's part of it," said Calipari. "Some of it was, you know, you build it up so high it gives you a chance to start whacking at it. But that's part of it. And again, they have handled it great, and I'm proud of them."
Ninth-seeded Kansas State also had an uneven run down the stretch of the season, losing four of their last six games, including two straight. Their latest loss came on March 13 against Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship tournament.
