It's probably one's worst nightmare to find out about an arrest warrant through the news media. Well, 56-year-old Anita Baker unfortunately had to experience just that.
A TV news report informed the soul singer about her impending arrest for not making an appearance in court over a $15,000 dispute with a decorator, the Hollywood Reporter reported.
For some creative pieces done in her Gross Pointe, Mich., estate, Baker has been involved in a legal dispute with a painting and decorating company.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ray Smith Painting and Decorating claims that Baker owes them more than $15,000 for some provided works.
Baker took to Twitter to express her shock over the news. "WHATTT??!!... sittin' in the kitchen watching this on TV. BIG time crazy. Atty on his way to TV Station. Devil sho is busy."
"We certainly would have liked to resolve it before now. We just want to try to get my client his money," said attorney Daniel Gerow, who represents the firm, Ray Smith Painting and Decorating, according to ClickOnItDetroit.com.
Ray Smith Painting and Decorating did some renovation work on Baker's Detroit-area home. When she failed to pay for their services, the dispute was taken to court.
However, she failed to make an appearance in court on the scheduled date, the Hollywood Reporter reported.
Jamaal Hamood, Baker's attorney, said, "She had paid them almost $60,000, and the contract was supposed to be far less than that, and at the end, ended up with a job that was very shoddy. Very poor workmanship. She has pictures."
"Hamood told the Associated Press that he plans to file a motion to cancel the warrant, as he claimed that Baker was never served with papers and didn't know that she'd been sued," the Hollywood Reporter reported. "He added that Baker is out of town and will remain out of town until things are cleared up."
