Philadelphia Phillies Roy Halladay announced on Wednesday that he will to have surgery on his pitching shoulder.
The surgery is intended to repair a partially torn rotator cuff and remove bone spurs from the area, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Halladay, 35, is hopeful for a 2013 return. Recovery is expected, at its quickest, to take three months.
"In certain cases it's been three months, but we really don't have a timetable," Halladay told the Philadelphia Daily News. "I think the timetable is going to come once they go in and confirm hey, what we saw on the x rays is exactly what we saw when we went in there. They were definitely optimistic that I would be back this year."
Phillies fans can take comfort in the doctors' belief that Halladay will return to form after a subpar season so far.
"The doctor seemed pretty optimistic that if what they saw is correct [that] I could come back and be a lot more effective and have a chance to pitch this year and they said they thought they could turn back the clock two or three years for me," Halladay said.
Halladay, a winner of two Cy Young awards, hopes the surgery will be a solution to his recent slump. In 34 1/3 innings this year, Halladay has allowed 33 earned runs, including 17 in his past two starts.
Philadelphia has called up Tyler Cloyd to fill Halladay's spot in the rotation. The Phillies play the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
