First-seeded Wichita State remains undefeated with a 35-0 record. The Shockers head into Sunday's contest after dismantling Cal Poly on Friday, 64-37. They expect a bigger challenge from No. 8 seed Kentucky, who's consistently one of college basketball's best programs.
"I grew up watching Kentucky basketball. I have some family in the area. I actually made it to a couple of games," sophomore guard Ron Baker told the Associated Press. "I don't know the program that well but when you hear 'Kentucky,' you think basketball."
In addition to advancing to the Sweet 16, a win against Kentucky and their big-name players would be sweet for the Shockers.
"They've got a lot of people on their team that are projected to be certain picks in the draft, and have certain futures, but at the same time, they have to play the game just like we do," said senior forward Cleanthony Early. "I feel like I can play at any level, and I'm pretty sure they feel the same way."
Kentucky made it to the SEC final before falling to Florida, 61-60. They earned a spot in the last 32 of the NCAA Tournament after defeating Kansas State on Friday, 56-59.
