LG Launches Smartphone-Controlled Smart Lamp; Costs Around $32

LG Electronics launched its first Smart Lamp that can be paired with a smartphone to control various functions like turning it on, off, brightness adjustments and self timer.

LG, renowned electronics company, will be lighting up your house with its first smart domestic light bulb. The newly launched Smart Lamp pairs with both Android and iOS devices through a companion app for basic controls such as turning on and off along with some unique features like Security Mode and Play Mode. The smart bulb will not increase your electricity bills as the company says the Smart Lamp is 80 percent more energy efficient than the standard incandescent bulbs.

According to a LG press release (via The Droid Guy) Sunday, the Smart Lamp uses LED technology that adds durability and efficiency, but not at the cost of brightness. LED bulbs are easier to make in different colors, but the company currently offers Smart Lamp in a Day White shade. The bulb is expected to last for 10 years with 5 hours of average usage every day.

LG Smart Lamp relies on a companion app for Android and iOS devices for dimming the light or tuning them on and off remotely. The app for respective platforms connects the smartphone to the light bulb via Bluetooth. The Smart Bulb also comes with two interesting modes; the Security Mode and Play Mode.

The Security Mode allows smartphone users to control how the bulb behaves, even in the absence of the owner. Users can set a specific time for the bulb to go on or off automatically, which helps consume less energy.

Play Mode is a feature that only Android users have access to, at least for now. LG allows users to turn the living room into a club dance floor. Play Mode makes the lights blink or dim in rhythm with the beat of music that is being played on a connected smartphone. Additionally, this option also alerts users when there is an incoming call. If the smartphone is kept on silent in a bag, this feature will notify users of a new call by blinking the light.

The LG Smart Lamp app can be installed on Android devices running at least 4.3 Jelly Bean and iOS devices need to have iOS 6.0 or higher. According to the company, the Smart Lamp is available in South Korea for 35,000 won (around $32), but there is no information on when it will be available in the international markets.
