UNC Chapel Hill Update: Knife-Wielding Man Sent For Psychiatric Evauation

A man who threatened a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was sent for a psychiatric evaluation, WRAL-TV reported.

Jesse Alan Kister, 31, was arrested near the school about 45 minutes after he allegedly threatened the student on a campus courtyard on Sunday.

According to witnesses, Kister began arguing with the student in the courtyard and eventually pulled out knives, screaming "Get out." When other people approached him, he ran off.

The situation prompted school officials to place the school on lockdown. Students and faculty were warned via text and email messages in addition to a siren system that was activated.

According to Kister's LinkedIn profile, he received his bachelor's degree and two master's degrees from UNC Chapel Hill. His profile also details his experience working for several technology companies and launched Algorhythmic L3C, a health care informatics consulting firm, last year.

After seeing Kister's photo in media reports, UNC student Peter Diaz filed an assault with a deadly weapon complaint with police. Diaz told authorities that Kister pulled a knife out on him and another person on Saturday night outside of the Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom.

On Monday, police said Diaz did not want to press charges.
