Group Offers One-Way Trip to Mars; Over 78,000 Apply So Far (WATCH)

A Netherlands-based group is now accepting applications for anyone looking to change their place of residence—to Mars. In just a couple of weeks the proposal from “Mars One” has received applications from over 78,000 people from 120 different countries, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The group is attempting to turn the colonization of Mars into a reality TV show. There are no requirements expect being at least 18 and being prepared for anything.

However, there are a few things to consider. Let me list them for you:

· Mars has no running water

· You cannot freely breathe on the planet

· The atmosphere doesn’t provide any protection from harmful radiation

· The surface temperature seems to change on a whim

· Finally, and maybe the most important of the facts, is the ticket being offered by Mars One is a one-way ticket. They are not offering a ride back.

If anyone in the United States would like to apply, the cost is $38. Some of the questions on the application pertain to your desire to go to Mars, your thoughts on not being able to come back to Earth, and how you would describe your sense of humor.

The company has decided to pick anywhere from 28 to 40 candidates by 2015. The applicants will train in groups over a seven-year period. Then the viewing audience will pick who they want to travel to Mars.

"What we are looking for is not restricted to a particular background," said Chief Medical Officer for the group Norbert Kraft in a statement. “From Round 1 we will take forward the most committed creative, resilient and motivated applicants."

Co-founder Bas Landsorp pointed out that the group still has a massive amount of fundraising and engineering to do if they want this to become a reality.

Landsorp predicts a cost of $6 billion will take care of the trip to Mars as well as making the planet a safe place to live. He plans to make some of the money through the applications and a reality show that will air throughout the world.

The application videos can be seen on the Mars One website. You can sort through the videos by country, gender, age of popularity.
