Tumblr is following the tracks of other web-based platforms to offer upgraded two-factor authentication in a bid to hold off hackers.
As web security takes high priority among users, several Internet-based companies have come up with different ways to protect users' private data. The single sign on method was found vulnerable, so companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Twitter, Dropbox and others started offering two-factor authentication. Tumblr, the micro-blogging platform owned by Yahoo, is now adopting the upgraded security method to keep millions of its users' accounts safe.
Tumblr announced the new security feature in a blog post Monday, allowing users to set up the two-factor authentication under the Settings menu.
"You know how you need two keys to launch a nuclear missile?" Tumblr wrote in a blog post. "Two-factor authentication works like that. One key is your password, the other key is your cellular phone, and you need both to access your Tumblr Dashboard. Keep your Dashboard safe and secure, like you do with your nuclear missile."
The two-factor authentication does not promise absolute security of users' accounts, but it does make it difficult for hackers to get in. By activating the two-factor security, users will receive a random code on their registered cell phone or other devices. Only after entering the code into the website, can they log in to their account. But for users to get these codes while signing in, they must enable the new feature.
Tumblr users can enable the two-factor authentication by accessing the account settings page and turning on TFA under security. It then requires users to enter their cell phone number and the account password to send a unique code. Users can alternatively choose to get the code using an authenticator app, as the Tumblr team recommends having both methods enabled as a backup. After entering the six-digit code into the settings page, the TFA will be activated.
Next time users try to sign in to their Tumblr account, an additional box asking for a unique code will appear. Enter the code and you're in. Users can download the authentication app for Android and iOS to scan a barcode and generate the unique code instantly.
