LG Announces Knock Code Unlocking For G2 and G Flex With More Devices To Follow

LG announced Tuesday that it will roll out the Knock Code unlocking system to earlier LG smartphones starting with G2 and G Flex in April.

LG Electronics, one of the largest smartphone makers, is not leaving the smartphone owners of its earlier models out in the cold while the company is revamping its line of high-end mobile phones. The electronics giant announced Tuesday that it will begin rolling out the improved screen-tap security feature, the Knock Code, to the earlier models starting April. First in the list are LG G2 and G Flex followed by other old models.

LG's Knock Code security system is an upgrade from the company's KnockOn, which uses a double tap on the screen to wake up the phone before unlocking. The Knock Code UX, which is a key feature in the company's latest smartphones including G Pro 2, G2 mini, F series and L series, directly unlocks the device by tapping the device's screen in a certain order set by the owner.

"LG engineers placed a great amount of emphasis on providing users with exceptional security and convenience when developing Knock Code," Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said in a press release, Tuesday. "Making Knock Code accessible to a wider audience is consistent with our direction to differentiate LG mobile devices on the basis of user experience."

Knock Code allows users to choose from two to eight combinations of taps on the four segmented corners of the screen. According to LG, Knock Code offers 80,000 possible combinations, making it more secure than other devices built with finger print scanners. Though the company did not point directly at its rivals, LG is hinting at Apple, HTC and Samsung that currently feature the technology in their flagship smartphones.

"In addition to being safer and more convenient, Knock CodeTM is also more responsive compared to bio-recognition systems, which are much more susceptible to variations in the environment," the company said.

LG will be rolling out the Knock Code UX in an update, starting April. The smartphone maker will announce specific timings in the weeks to come.
