A man in New Mexico is recovering from a gunshot wound he received from police officers after pointing his gun at them on Sunday, KOB-TV reported.
Russell Werner, 32, remains in recovery at UNM Hospital.
On Sunday, two Los Lunas police officers spotted a car involved in a chase with Belen police at an apartment complex. When the officers approached the vehicle, they said Werner came at them with an assault-style rifle.
The officers said they instructed Werner to drop his weapon, which he refused to do -- prompting both of them to open fire. He was shot multiple times.
Werner is facing charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm.
Byron Rohrer, a resident at the apartment complex, recalled what happened to KRQE-TV.
"The next thing we know, we hear 'stop, drop it, drop it,' " Rohrer said. "Probably like four to six gunshots I would say went off."
Rohrer said he believes Werner was shot in the leg, though authorities will not disclose how many times he was shot. They will also not release the names of the police officers involved.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
