Justina Pelletier Update: Conn. Girl Placed In Care Of Mass. Child Welfare Amid Legal Dispute

A 15-year-old Connecticut girl was placed in the care of Massachusetts child welfare services on Tuesday following a legal dispute over two hospitals with different medical diagnoses, ABC News reported.

Judge Joseph Johnston handed down his decision in the case of Justina Pelletier, of West Hartford, Conn., whose parents, Lou and Linda Pelletier, sought custody of her.

Justina was being treated for mitochondrial disease -- a disorder that affects cellular energy production -- at Tufts Medical Center. Later on, the Boston Children's Hospital claimed the root of her condition was psychiatric.

Lou and Linda Pelletier initially rejected the second diagnosis and tried to take her back to Tufts, prompting the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families to take custody of Justina.

According to the Boston Globe, Johnston's ruling means the agency will get to "decide whether or when Pelletier should be returned to her West Hartford, Conn., home."

Justina is currently residing at an unnamed facility in Framingham. Prior to that, she spent a year in the psychiatric unit of the Children's Hospital.
