U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, who is running for U.S. Senate in Michigan, will release his first campaign advertisements on television during the Sweet 16 games, MLive.com reported.
Two ads -- one 30 seconds long and the second one minute long -- will air on Friday when the University of Michigan and Michigan State University play in separate basketball games.
Peters, a Democrat and three-term congressman, is running for the seat left behind by U.S. Sen. Carl Levin. He is expected to face off against Republican Terri Lynn Land.
In the first ad, Peters directly addresses viewers.
"I'm Gary Peters, I was raised in an average Michigan middle class home," he says. "Dad was a teacher. Mom was a nurse's aide. I was able to go to college, and earn three degrees while going to school at night. I served in the Navy Reserve, and after 9/11, I volunteered again."
In the other ad, Peters' wife, Colleen, talks about her husband's story.
Interest groups have released attacks against both candidates, including Americans For Prosperity and the Senate Majority PAC.
Heather Swift, a spokeswoman for Land, told MLive.com that Peters' ads are misleading.
"Gary Peters' idea of a strong economy is saddling Michigan's middle class and job creators with more taxes and more debt, and making it more difficult for hard-working families to put food on the table, gas in the tank and send their kids to college," Swift said in an e-mail.
