Amazon Inc. sent out invites for a press event in New York next week, with reports hinting at a possible set top box launch.
Amazon Inc., the biggest online retailer, may finally be taking the wraps off its long-rumored gadget for video streaming on TV. The e-commerce giant sent out press invites for an event scheduled to take place April 2, in New York. The invite does not specifically mention the details of the event except the company promises an "update for our video business." Several media reports are hoping to finally see Amazon's most-awaited set-top box.
Several rumors have been swirling around Amazon's set-top box, ranging from the unannounced gadget to run on a modified version of Android to an interactive gaming element to be included in the device. The invitation to the press for a mysterious event shows a note that reads "Please join us for an update on our video business," according to Business Insider who got an invite from Amazon.
The background of the invite shows a couch with popcorn scattered around. While the combination of a couch and popcorn could only mean watching a movie or a show on television, Amazon's connection to this strongly points toward the new set-top box.
Based on a previous report by TechCrunch, Amazon's upcoming set top box will feature a similar design like the Chromecast, as a dongle, and offer video streaming from popular services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon's own video library. In addition, the device will offer support for full PC game titles, adding to the entertainment factor. The report on gaming integration was strengthened when a shot of Amazon-branded video game controller was leaked earlier this month, Business Insider reports.
If the game-integration has any credibility, Amazon will allow users to download Android games to the device and play them on TV's big screen.
Amazon's entry in the new category might be regarded too late as the market is entrenched by gadgets from Apple and Roku. Google has also secured a significant place with its Chromecast plug-and-use dongle for TV. Chromecast's low-price range attracted millions of buyers resulting in Google's decision to bring the dongle to 11 new international markets including Canada, U.K. and nine other European countries.
But Amazon's game integration will be something new for buyers to look forward to. Also if the online retailer hits the right price range, chances of Amazon's set top box are bright.
