Eighth-seeded Kentucky has gotten hot when it matters most. The Wildcats earned a spot in the Elite Eight after defeating Kansas State, then-undefeated Wichita State and, most recently, Louisville.
The biggest difference Kentucky coach John Calipari is his freshmen, who are still learning on the job, are beginning to play the right way.
"I'm just happy we're playing better right now," Calipari told the Associated Press. "Because I'm telling you, we almost ran out of runway when we landed the plane. As a matter of fact, the nose of the plane was in the grass. But we got down. And if the runway was 25 games instead of 30, we probably went off the edge."
Calipari acknowledged he made some adjustments throughout the season, but he wouldn't elaborate.
"I'm going to wait until it's over and I'll go through everything that we did and when I did it," he said. "When you hear what I did, you'll say: 'Makes perfect sense.' And then you're going to ask: 'Why didn't you do it earlier?' And I'm going to tell you: 'I don't know. I should have.'"
Second-seeded Michigan, meanwhile, advanced by defeating Wofford, Texas and Tennessee. While the Wolverines haven't faced any seed higher than No. 7, coach John Beilein isn't putting any stock in the seeding.
"And so, what it is, is, you've got eight teams right now," he said, "and these are the eight best teams in the country, no matter where they were seeded."
