Columbus State University Shooting: Police Fatally Shoot Gunman On Campus

Campus police at Columbus State University fatally shot a gunman on campus Sunday afternoon, the Associated Press reported.

Zikarious Jaquan Flint, 20, died from two gunshot wounds, according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.

No other injuries were reported.

Flint was not a student at the Georgia school. According to authorities, officers chased Flint near campus apartments and no lockdown was enforced during the incident.

University Police Chief Rus Drew said officers responded to a call at 2:35 p.m. and arrived three minutes later, where they began chasing Flint on foot.

"There was a short foot chase and at some point the suspect turned and faced the officers and shots were fired," Drew told the AP, adding that a lockdown was not issued after officers determined the situation an "isolated threat."

"This is a terrible tragedy," CSU President Tim Mescon said. "We'll cooperate fully with the investigation. ... Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this as well as their families."

School officials said counselors will be available to faculty and students if needed.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is joining the investigation into the shooting.

Columbus State University is located in Columbus, Georgia, about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta and close to the Alabama state line. The school has an estimated 8,200 students.
