First-year manager Bryan Price makes his season debut on Monday for the Reds. Price, who replaced Dusty Baker in October, will be without his full complement of players for opening day, including Mat Latos and Devin Mesoraco.

Although Cincinnati has a league-high eight players on the disabled list, Pryce knows it's not an excuse.

"All we can do is be optimistic going into the season," Price told the Associated Press. "We know that we have the bulk of our team intact. We know we have some guys getting healthy and they're on the way. But we can't lower expectations or we'll play to those expectations and not be as good as we should be."

Reds first baseman Joey Votto echoed the sentiment of not using injuries as an excuse.

"It seems like we have caught some bad luck," Votto said. "A lot of teams deal with this. It's very common. I think we're a resilient team. I think we're deep in talent and I think we can withstand this."

Johnny Cueto (5-2, 2.82 ERA) gets the start on Monday for Cincinnati. He'll be tasked to duel with Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright, who struggled in his four starts against Cincinnati last season.

Despite Wainwright posting a 7.77 ERA against the Reds last season, manager Mike Matheny believes the pitcher's new sinker will remedy last year's struggles.

"He's pitching completely different than what people say," Matheny said. "They're not going to be prepared for what he is doing right now, because I don't know if you can."
