The Tennessee Titans are expected to trade or release running back Chris Johnson within a week. Assuming Johnson becomes a free agent, the New York Jets reportedly are reportedly interested in signing him.
Johnson's decreasing production over the past seasons and his hefty, $8 million salary for 2014 are likely to force Tennessee to part ways with the veteran.
"Titans offseason workouts begin a week from today. Expect a decision on Chris Johnson beforehand," NFL.com's Ian Rapoport tweeted on Monday. "... There is some trade interest. Eventually, interest needs to turn to action. If not, release comes."
Some reports indicate the Jets have interest in Johnson.
"(Jets) have been reluctant to dive into DeSean Jackson derby, but perhaps they're allotting money for Chris Johnson. There is some interest," Rapoport tweeted on Monday.
The New York Daily News also reported the Jets' interest.
"Jets whiffed on top free agent RB choice: Donald Brown. Missed out on mJD too. (New York) has some level of interest in Chris Johnson if available," Manish Mehta of The Daily News tweeted on Monday.
New York has salary cap space to sign Johnson, whose speed would complement power-running halfback Chris Ivory. The Jets are also looking for depth in the backfield, given Ivory's history of trouble staying healthy.
Chris Wesseling of NFL.com reports the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Crdinals could possibly pursue Johnson if he hits the free agent market.
Johnson, 28, finished the 2013 season with a career-low 3.9 yards per carry for 1,077 yards and six touchdowns.
