Facebook Providing ‘Privacy Checkups’ For Members Who Might Share Too Much

Facebook will now lend its hand in supporting select users on the social network website to guard their privacy and keep them in check through a "Privacy Checkup" initiative, Time reported.

In an effort to educate some members about the different privacy options available, the initiative has been set up for security concerns.

"According to those familiar with the new feature, you'll only get a Privacy Checkup if your account is set to post publicly - that is, if your settings have you sharing beyond your immediate group of Facebook friends," according to Time.

The following pop-up gets screened to your account when you share with the public, advising, "Sorry to interrupt. You haven't changed who can see your posts lately, so we just wanted to make sure you're sharing this post with the right audience. (Your current setting is Public, though you can change this whenever you post.)"

An option is then quickly provided where you are allowed to change your privacy settings to limit the post to just your Facebook friends.

A recent concern regarding Facebook's use of private information has been the social network's access to how much it can learn about you though your posts and interactions.

Large amounts of personal information has helped the network target product placement ads towards members in return for revenue.

"Regardless of whether your account is chosen for a Privacy Checkup, Techlicious recommends taking your family's privacy in your own hands," Time reported. "Make a habit of reviewing your Facebook privacy settings once or twice a year."

Time continued, "If you have kids, make a clear privacy policy for your family. Teach your kids what's acceptable to be shared and with whom. Social media can be a lot of fun, but it's important to remember: One wrong status update could seriously damage you or your child's future."
