Detroit opened the new season on Monday with a 4-3 win over Kansas City. Tigers shortstop Alex Gonzalez's two RBIs, including one from his game-winning single in the ninth, provided to be the difference in Detroit's win.
"I've played on a lot of opening days - I don't even remember all of them - but this one was special," Gonzalez said after the game, via ESPN. "I was looking for a pitch that I could elevate, and I got one. I rounded first, and all I saw was the whole team coming from me."
The win also marked the debut of first-year Tigers manager Brad Ausmus.
"There's two things that could have spoiled Opening Day for me," Ausmus said. "One, if we lost. And two, if the sun wasn't out. Because for me, Opening Day, the sun is out, fans are having fun, they're eating their popcorn, drinking their beer. The energy is high."
Max Scherzer takes the mound on Wednesday for Detroit. The reigning Cy Young winner is 5-0 with a 2.86 ERA in seven starts against Kansas City, according to ESPN. Despite having a history of success against the Royals, Scherzer doesn't plan on changing anything in his preparations.
"I'm not going to say it's any different because from my end, I've always respected what they've been able to do," Scherzer told the team website, via ESPN. "Even when they have struggled as a team, they've also been very good offensively. They've always done a lot at the plate."
Royals pitcher Jason Vargas is set to duel Scherzer. Vargas, who's making his debut as a Royal, is coming off a 9-8 season with a 4.02 ERA.
