The New Jersey teen who filed suit against her parents to make them pay for her tuition and other education fees announced on Wednesday that she'd chosen a college to attend, and had received a large chunk of scholarship money.
18-year-old Rachel Canning, who made national headlines last month after she claimed she was kicked out of her family home once she came of age, wrote on Facebook that she'd decided to attend Western New England University and study biomedical engineering.
"Decision made," she posted on her page. "WNE U class of 2018 BME Major w/ $56,000$ scholarship."
The Detroit Free Press reported that the post was liked by over 145 Facebook users before it was removed from public view at around 1:30 on Tuesday.
An unidentified spokesperson from Western New England University confirmed this week that Canning had, in fact, been accepted into the Springfield, Mass., college.
Lincoln Park resident Canning's story first gained national attention in early March, when she claimed her parents "abandoned" her when she turned 18. In her filing, she contended that her parents cut her off "from all support both financially and emotionally."
Rachel also said her parents physically and sexually abused her, and weren't paying back tuition owed to her private high school.
But according to Rachel's father Sean Canning, the teen's issues weren't portrayed accurately at the time of the suit. He told USA Today that her case had been blown out of proportion, and that his daughter didn't want to follow basic rules of the home - following curfew, doing chores and not arguing with her two siblings among them.
Eventually, Rachel dismissed the lawsuit, and returned home to reunite with her family.
