Chicago is still looking for their first win of the season. They lost each of their first two games against Pittsburgh by one run. Fatigue could play a factor on Thursday after Wednesday's game went for five hours and 55 minutes.
"We did everything we could possibly do," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said, via ESPN. "The guys kept coming back and that's a good sign for all of us. As long as we keep going out there and playing the way we're playing right now, good things are bound to happen."
Jason Hammel, who signed a one-year contract with Chicago in January, is slated to take the mound on Thursday. After finishing last season with a 7-8 record and 4.97 ERA, Hammel is adamant about bouncing back in 2014.
"I like proving people wrong," Hammel told the team website. "I like the out of nowhere type of stuff. That's how my whole career has been. There were a lot of naysayers who said, 'Oh, he's pretty good, but not one of the best,' and that's just fuel, and that just fuels this whole clubhouse."
The right-hander will be opposed by Pirates pitcher Wandy Rodriguez, who's 6-2 with a 2.15 ERA in his last 10 starts at PNC Park. Rodriguez has played even better against the Cubs since joining Pittsburgh in 2012, posting a 3-0 record and 1.93 ERA in his three starts against them.
"He's a special pitcher, because he can locate his curveball on both sides of the plate, and he can throw a changeup pretty much at any time he wants to," Pirates catcher Russell Martin told the team website.
