The New York Jets reportedly plan to pursue running back Chris Johnson if the Tennessee Titans release him. Tennessee is expected to trade or release Johnson by Monday.
Speculation has grown for months that Johnson wouldn't be a Titan heading into the 2014 season. Now, even his agent, Joel Segal, agrees.
"Had some communication with Titans management today, and I think it's a matter of time before Chris won't be with the Titans -- just don't know when," Segal said Wednesday on SiriusXM Radio, via ESPN.
A trade for Johnson is unlikely because of his hefty salary ($8 million in 2014, $8 million in 2015 and $7 million in 2016), leaving the Titans with no other option but to cut him. Paul Kuharsky of ESPN believes the Titans will release him before Monday.
"Tennessee's offseason program starts Monday, and Johnson has told The Tennessean he intends to be there," Kuharsky wrote on Thursday. "That could serve as an unofficial deadline for the Titans, who would be on the hook for Johnson's entire $8 million salary should he suffer an injury that would cost him the season."
If Johnson does become a free agent, multiple reports indicate the Jets would make a push for him.
"(Jets) have been reluctant to dive into DeSean Jackson derby, but perhaps they're allotting money for Chris Johnson," NFL.com's Ian Rapoport tweeted on Monday. "There is some interest."
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports also reported the Jets' interest in Johnson.
"Still expecting Chris Johnson's release to come this week," CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora tweeted on Wednesday. "When it does, look for the Jets to pounce on the RB. Would be a strong fit."
Although Johnson finished the 2013 season with 1,077 rushing yards and six touchdowns, he averaged a career-low 3.9 yards per carry.
